Brooklyn Nine-Nine Star Andre Braugher Dies Aged 61

The news of the actor's death was confirmed by his publicist Jennifer Allen, who revealed that Braugher died on Monday following a brief illness.

Braugher enjoyed a successful career, which saw him win two Emmy Awards, including one for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, as Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, a show which ran from 1993 to 1999.

He was also renowned for his role as Captain Raymond Holt in US comedy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, starring alongside Andy Sanberg and Terry Crews. 

Braugher's second Emmy Award arrived in 2006, for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor in a Mini-Series, for his portrayal of professional burglar Nick Atwater in Thief. 

Other notable credits include starring as Benjamin Dr Ben Gideon in Gideon's Crossing, O Davis in Tuskegee Airmen, and Owen in Men of a Certain Age. All roles saw Braugher nominated for Emmy Award nominations.

Paying tribute to Braugher, Terry Crews shared this heartfelt message via Instagram.

"Can't believe you're gone so soon. I'm honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent", Crews said. 

"This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you", he added. "Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like".

David Simon whose book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets on which Homicide: Life on the Street was based, also paid tribute to Braugher.

Men Of A Certain Age creator, Mike Royce also added, "This is impossible for me to process. He was [the] best actor in the world. An incredible human being. An incomprehensible loss".

Andre Braugher's breakthrough role saw him star alongside Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, and Denzil Washington in the 1989 film, Glory, directed by Ed Zwick. A film which saw Washington win his first Academy Award for his supporting role. 

The actor also recently starred om biographical drama, She Said, where he played Dean Banquet, executive editor for the New York Times, starring alongside Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan.
