Chappell Roan has built her reputation on being anything but subtle. Known for theatrical stage makeup, exaggerated silhouettes and unapologetically maximalist glamour, the “Midwest Princess” has made bold colour and camp aesthetics central to her identity.
But in her latest campaign, the breakout star has surprised fans by debuting what many are calling her most understated look yet — a striking “clean girl” transformation that underscores not only her versatility, but her growing global influence.
The campaign marks MAC Cosmetics’ long-anticipated entry into Sephora stores this March, a significant move for the beauty brand as it expands its retail footprint. To signal the moment, MAC enlisted its newest global ambassador, Roan, alongside Gabbriette and Quenlin Blackwell, in a high-gloss rollout designed to make noise internationally.
Shot by Richard Burbridge, the campaign imagery shows Roan in two dramatically different modes: nearly makeup-free and soft-lit in one frame, then fully glammed in another. The contrast is deliberate. For an artist synonymous with hyper-feminine drama — white-painted complexions, glittering lashes, graphic lips and theatrical contour — this pared-back aesthetic feels almost radical.
In the campaign video, soundtracked by Portishead’s song Teardrop, Roan opens with the statement: “MAC is culture.” Blackwell follows with “MAC is for everyone,” before Gabbriette adds, “MAC is sensation.” The visuals then shift, showing each woman applying lip colour and transitioning from minimal beauty to bold glamour — a visual metaphor for reinvention and self-expression.
For Roan, the makeup was crafted by longtime collaborator Andrew Dahling, who intentionally dialled down the usual explosion of colour. Her two-tone lip — created using MAC lip pencil in Auburn and lipstick in Marrakesh on the upper lip, paired with lip pencil in Stripdown and lipstick in Taupe on the lower lip — nods to classic 1990s MAC glamour rather than Roan’s typically kaleidoscopic palette.
Dahling explained: "The look that we created for Sephora is a nod to the iconic 90s M.A.C mug! Timeless and impactful, this look highlights Chappell’s encapsulating eyes and showcases some of M·A·C’s most iconic lip shades." He added, "It’s a bit unexpected for Chappell Roan, as we often use an array of color. But to celebrate M.A.C’s newest venture in the world market of beauty, we wanted to create a look that honored M.A.C’s legacy as a brand, by and for everyone.”

That sense of “unexpected” is precisely what makes the campaign resonate. Roan has spent the past year cementing herself as one of pop’s most visually distinctive performers, with songs like Good Luck, Babe! and Femininomenon becoming anthems for a new generation of fans. Her aesthetic — part drag homage, part theatre kid fantasy, part queer pop maximalism — has been inseparable from her rise. Seeing her stripped back into something resembling the internet’s so-called “clean girl” look feels almost subversive.

But rather than diluting her identity, the transformation highlights her range. The campaign’s theme — shifting from minimal to maximal — mirrors Roan’s own artistic duality. She can command a festival stage in glitter and theatrical white foundation one night, then embody pared-back sophistication the next. That adaptability is a hallmark of artists who move beyond niche appeal and into international recognition.

It also reinforces her expanding global footprint. When Roan was announced as MAC’s global ambassador in December, she said: “Partnering with MAC feels full circle,” adding, “I can’t wait for the time when I can share what we’ve made with people everywhere.” The emphasis on “everywhere” feels particularly relevant now, as MAC’s Sephora launch positions both brand and ambassador in front of a broader worldwide audience.

MAC’s Global Creative Director Nicola Formichetti summed up the campaign’s ethos: “That shift from minimal to maximal is the essence of MAC. It reflects the complete range of looks you can create and the freedom of expression that defines us.”
For fans who fell in love with her technicolour world, the clean look may come as a surprise. But for an artist stepping confidently onto the international stage, it feels like evolution — not compromise.
