George Wendt, renowned for starring in the 1980s TV comedy, Cheers, has died aged 76.

Wendt, who later forged a career on the Broadway stage with Art, Hairspray and Elf, died peacefully in his sleep at home, publicity firm The Agency Group confirmed.

The actor's family also paid tribute with this statement. "George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him," the statement read. "He will be missed forever".

Despite this long and distinguished career, George Wendt is perhaps best known for starring as Norm Peterson in the much loved TV comedy, Cheers. The 1980s hit was centred on lovable losers at a Boston Bar, starring Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Shelly Long, Kelsey Grammer, John Ratzenberger, Woody Harrelson and Kirstie Alley.

The show saw Wendt earn six consecutive Emmy Award nominations for best supporting actor in comedy series from 1984 to 1989.

It also served as a spin off for another show, Frasier, which went on to win 28 Emmy Awards from 117 nominations.
