Cillian Murphy To Reprise Role As Tommy Shelby In New Peaky Blinders Movie

Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as gangster Tommy Shelby for a new spin-off movie for Peaky Blinders.

The series' director Steven Knight confirmed this news at a recent premiere for his new BBC drama, The Town.

Oscar winning actor Cillian Murphy had starred in the British crime drama for six seasons, running from 2013 to 2022. In 2021, it was confirmed that all loose ends of the series would be tied up with a movie, instead of a seventh series.

“Murphy is definitely returning for [the movie]", Steven Knight revealed. “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth".

Cillian Murphy who recently won an Oscar for his role in the Christopher Nolan directed Oppenheimer, had previously stated that he would love to continue his role in Peaky Blinders.

“If there’s more story there, I’d love to do it,” the Cork native told Rolling Stone last year. “But it has to be right. Steve Knight wrote 36 hours of television, and we left on such a high. I’m really proud of that last series. So, it would have to feel legitimate and justified to do more".

Creator Steven Knight has always remained keen to wrap up loose ends with a film for Peaky Blinders.

"The film, I know exactly what it’s about. And I know what two stories it’s going to tell,” he said in an interview with Esquire in 2022. “What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be".

Having previously hinted that the film would arrive on cinema screens in 2024, Knight has said that it will have a 2025 release date, with shooting beginning in September.
