Daniel Radcliffe has opened up about having what he describes as an “addictive personality”, revealing that his current obsession is fitness — a far healthier outlet than the struggles he faced earlier in life.

The 35-year-old actor admitted he has become something of a “fitness freak”, throwing himself into gym sessions with the same intensity he once directed elsewhere.

He told The Wall Street Journal: “I feel like I'm a cliché of a former alcoholic or anyone who had any kind of addictive personality and then switched that addiction to being about the gym.”

Radcliffe added that while he may not immediately look like someone deeply immersed in gym culture, his approach is serious.

His current routine reportedly includes weights, cardio and circuit training, reflecting a structured and disciplined mindset.

For many fans, Radcliffe will forever be associated with his childhood role as the Boy Who Lived in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first instalment in the blockbuster franchise based on J. K. Rowling’s books. The eight-film series, which ran from 2001 to 2011, grossed more than $7.7 billion worldwide, turning Radcliffe into one of the most recognisable young actors on the planet before he was old enough to legally drink in the United States.

That level of global fame came with pressures he has spoken candidly about in the past. Radcliffe went sober in 2013, later admitting that alcohol became a coping mechanism during his late teens and early twenties as he struggled with constant public attention.

Speaking previously on Off Camera With Sam Jones, he explained how drinking became a way to deal with feeling scrutinised in social settings.

“I really struggled with particularly in my late teens when I was going out to places for the first time where you would feel…again it could have largely been in my head but…you would feel watched when you went into a bar, when you went into a pub.”

He added in that interview that alcohol became a way of “forgetting” he was being observed — a common theme among child stars who transition into adulthood under intense public scrutiny.

Since getting sober, Radcliffe has built a reputation for choosing unconventional and often daring roles, seemingly determined to step as far away from Hogwarts as possible. He has starred in indie projects such as Swiss Army Man, horror films like The Woman in Black, and most recently earned critical acclaim on Broadway, winning a Tony Award for his performance in the musical Merrily We Roll Along.

His comments about the gym reflect a broader understanding of how addictive tendencies can resurface in different forms. Psychologists often note that individuals with addictive personalities can channel that intensity into positive pursuits — including exercise — provided the behaviour remains balanced and healthy.

Radcliffe’s honesty about sobriety has resonated with many fans over the years.

Now settled into fatherhood and continuing to work steadily across stage and screen, Radcliffe appears to have found stability in routine and discipline. His “addiction” to fitness, as he jokingly frames it, may well be a reflection of that — structure replacing chaos, routine replacing escapism.

The actor’s willingness to discuss both past struggles and present habits adds to a long-running narrative of resilience.

From the heights of Pottermania to the pressures of early fame and eventual sobriety, Radcliffe’s journey has unfolded publicly. His latest comments suggest that while the intensity of his personality remains, it is now directed toward something far more constructive than the coping mechanisms of his youth.
