Domhnall Gleeson has revealed that he was advised to take on a role in the new spin off to The Office, by original star, Steve Carrell.
The Irish actor is to star in the upcoming spin off, The Paper, which is to stream on US platform, Peacock in September. The show is also being co created by Greg Daniels, the man who also created The Office.
The Paper is to see Gleeson play an idealistic new employee at the paper, with Sabrina Impacciatore will play the paper's managing editor. The only original cast member from The Office to feature as part of the cast us Oscar Nunez, who appears in the trailer as the office accountant. He also seems disappointed to see the crew he knew from the previous job. More on this here.
Speaking to People, Domhnall Gleeson credited John Krasinski and Steve Carrell with encouraging him to take on the role in the new spin off.
"He was wonderful. I mean, his big advice that he gave me was to do it", he said. "And the same with Steve Carell, another just wonderful actor who I'd worked with before".
Gleeson continued: “Their advice was, if it's Greg Daniels, you should do it because getting to work with him is a treat that not many people get to have".
"I'm so happy I did it because I think we have something really lovely. So I'm thrilled with it," he added.
"I mean, I like to think I would've got there on my own anyway, but certainly if [John] and Steve had been like, 'Don't do it, it's a nightmare,' I would've hightailed it, but they could not have been more positive about it, and I'm delighted I listened to them".
In another interview, Domhnall Gleeson remained coy regarding questions over the plotline for the spin off.
“I don't know that there's much I can tease because they're being super in-house about letting the information out when the show comes out, which I think is a good way to do it", he said. "People are going to have to take the show on its own merits because it's become something different. It's a whole new city. It's not like a remake".
"It's like the documentary crew went to a different city, and they're following different people", he added. "It's not a paper company, it's a newspaper. It's a very, very different setup".
