A new storyline for EastEnders is to see Davinder 'Nugget' Gulati face an epilepsy diagnosis.
Upcoming episodes of the soap will see Gulati, who is played by Juhaim Rasul Choudhury, diagnosed with this neurological disorder following a recent head trauma.
Starting next Monday, Nugget is to experience his first seizure following several spells of disorientation and confusion since returning home from hospital last month.
As the storyline continues, Nugget will be ultimately diagnosed with epilepsy, as well as how he adapts to living with the disorder and its impact on his every day life.
This storyline is aimed at starting "conversations, reduce stigma, and help bring the condition out of the shadows", according to the Epilepsy Society, who have been working with producers to raise awareness and ensure that this story is portrayed accurately and sensitively.
On this, the chief executive at the Epilepsy Society, Clare Pelham said: "One in 100 people has epilepsy, yet many keep it hidden because of stigma.
"That’s why we were delighted when EastEnders asked for our advice on portraying Nugget’s epilepsy story accurately".
"EastEnders has a powerful record of tackling tough issues", she added. "By showing what seizures are really like and how to support someone with epilepsy, Nugget’s story can spark conversations, reduce stigma, and help bring the condition out of the shadows".
Meanwhile, EsatEnders executive producer, Ben Wadley added: "We are committed to portraying Nugget’s journey authentically and with sensitivity, so have sought advice from the Epilepsy Society to ensure an accurate representation of the challenges a young person may face following their diagnosis".
Back in January, EastEnders star Derek Martin, who played Charlie Slater on the soap from 2001 to 2016, died aged 92.
