A gripping World War II thriller starring Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan has quietly landed on streaming and fans are urging people not to miss it.
Released in 2016, Anthropoid tells the extraordinary true story of two Czech resistance fighters who parachuted back into Nazi-occupied Prague on a near-impossible mission: to assassinate senior SS officer Reinhard Heydrich.
Heydrich, one of the chief architects of the Holocaust and a key figure in Hitler’s regime, famously dubbed ‘the man with the iron heart’, was among the most feared men in Nazi Germany.
The real-life 1942 operation that targeted him was codenamed Anthropoid, giving the film its title.
Murphy stars as Jozef Gabčík, while Dornan plays Jan Kubiš, the two soldiers tasked with carrying out the daring plot. French actress Charlotte Le Bon also features, alongside Toby Jones and Harry Lloyd.
The film was directed by Sean Ellis and made on a modest $9 million budget.
While it may have flown under the radar at the time, the film has built a loyal following in the years since. Now streaming on Amazon Prime Video in the UK, it currently boasts a strong four-and-a-half star rating from viewers.
Audiences have been full of praise, with one Rotten Tomatoes user calling it ‘a hidden gem’ and hailing it as one of Murphy’s best performances.
Another described it as ‘one of the most underrated World War II movies of all time’, applauding its blend of tense action and emotional depth.
Critical reaction was more measured, but largely positive. The film currently holds a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
For Murphy, the film marked another powerful turn in a career that would later see him win an Oscar for his role in Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan.
He’s next set to reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in the upcoming The Immortal Man, based on Peaky Blinders.
Dornan, meanwhile, was most recently seen in A Haunting in Venice, directed by Kenneth Branagh, and is set to appear in Love Is Not the Answer alongside Pamela Anderson and Steve Coogan.
