More than 20 years after its release, Kate Hudson is reflecting on the film widely considered the biggest commercial success of her romantic comedy careerHow to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Released in 2003, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a romantic comedy directed by Donald Petrie and starring Kate Hudson alongside Matthew McConaughey. The story follows magazine writer Andie Anderson, who sets out to deliberately drive a man away within ten days for a feature about common dating mistakes. At the same time, advertising executive Ben Barry makes a bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him within the same timeframe.

Unaware that they are both manipulating the relationship for professional gain, the pair embark on a chaotic romance filled with increasingly absurd situations as each tries to outmanoeuvre the other.

The film proved to be a major commercial success, grossing more than €150 million worldwide against a modest budget. It helped cement Hudson’s status as one of the defining romcom stars of the early 2000s, while also reinforcing McConaughey’s position as a leading man in the genre.

More than two decades later, the film remains one of the most rewatched romantic comedies of the era, frequently resurfacing on streaming platforms and television schedules, and continuing to resonate with fans of the genre.

In a recent interview with Variety, Hudson reflected on the experience of filming the movie and revealed a memorable moment she shared with her brother, actor Oliver Hudson, while revisiting the film.

“We were watching the movie, and it was the scene where I’m doing the photo album. He just looked at me and said: ‘You’re just so insane in this!’”

The scene she refers to — in which Andie presents an over-the-top scrapbook documenting her relationship — has become one of the film’s most memorable comedic moments.

According to Hudson, the exaggerated nature of the character and the outrageous situations she was placed in were exactly what made the role so enjoyable.

“It was so much fun. I got to go so far. It was one of those scenes where I was just nuts!”

Kate Hudson first rose to prominence at the beginning of the 2000s, quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognisable faces in romantic comedies.

Her breakthrough role came in 2000 with Almost Famous, directed by Cameron Crowe, where she played the charismatic groupie Penny Lane. The performance earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, instantly establishing her as a major talent.

Following that success, Hudson leaned fully into romantic comedy stardom with films such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, You, Me and Dupree (2006) and Bride Wars (2009), delivering fast-talking, charismatic performances that became synonymous with early-2000s romcom culture.

She also appeared in family-oriented films including Raising Helen (2004) and later showcased her musical and comedic abilities with a guest role on the hit TV series Glee, where she played dance instructor Cassandra July.

In the 2010s, Hudson diversified her career with roles outside the romcom genre. She appeared in the 2016 disaster drama Deepwater Horizon, starring alongside Mark Wahlberg, and lent her voice to the animated blockbuster Kung Fu Panda 3.

More recently, she has expanded her work into television, appearing in the drama series Truth Be Told, while also balancing acting with entrepreneurial ventures and a growing music career.

Despite the variety of projects she has taken on over the years, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days remains one of the defining titles of her filmography — and a film that continues to hold a special place in the history of modern romantic comedies.
