Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are set to depart Grey’s Anatomy, bringing an end to their long-running roles on the medical drama after nearly two decades.
McKidd, the Scottish actor who has portrayed Dr Owen Hunt since 2008, described the experience as one of the defining honours of his career. Reflecting on his 18-year tenure, he shared: “18 seasons. 18 years. That’s a fair stretch of a man’s life.” He added that what began as a hopeful opportunity turned into something far more meaningful: “I came over just hoping to get a shot… and somehow found a home. A family.”
Expressing gratitude to the cast, crew, and the show’s creators, McKidd noted how deeply the role shaped him both on and off screen. However, he signalled a desire to move forward creatively, explaining: “It’s time to build something of my own from the ground up. To tell new stories, and take everything I’ve learned here into the next chapter.”
Kim Raver, who has played Dr Teddy Altman for 16 years, also announced her departure with a heartfelt message. She reflected on the emotional significance of the role, writing: “Playing Dr Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart.” She credited the creative team for shaping her character’s journey and expressed appreciation for her colleagues and the production crew.
Looking back on her time on the show, Raver said: “Since that day, it has been a true gift to bring these stories to life.” She also thanked fans for their continued support, adding: “Your unwavering devotion and support are the reason this show remains such a force.”
Their characters, both former army medics, shared a complex relationship arc that included marriage in season 18 and, more recently, a transition into co-parenting as ex-partners.
Grey’s Anatomy, set in Seattle’s Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, has long followed the personal and professional lives of surgical interns and their mentors. Over the years, the series has featured a celebrated ensemble cast and remains one of television’s most enduring dramas.
