Macauley Culkin is to spearhead a new Home Alone film, according to reports.

This was confirmed by sources close to PEOPLE, 36 years on from when Culkin first burst onto the scene as the cheeky Kevin McCallister in what soon became a staple Christmas movie in the homes of many since. The films saw Kevin face two bumbling burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), after his family go on holiday without him.

It has been reported that this new project would see Culkin reprise his role as Kevin.

"It’s in the early stages, very early. It’s just an idea and an almost green light from Disney. Disney loved Macaulay’s idea, and everyone wants to see this happen", a source told PEOPLE.

Previously, Culkin had spoken about the possibility of a Home Alone sequel, even hinting that one plot could see him reprise his role as Kevin, as a dad who gets locked out of his own house, with his son setting all kinds of traps to prevent him from getting back in. Such a chip off the old block!

"I kind of had this idea," he said at his A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin at the time. "I’m either a widower or a divorcee".

He added: "I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard, and I’m not really paying enough attention, and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me, and then I get locked out".

Back in February, it was revealed that Macauley Culkin and his partner Brenda Song had been using Home Alone to teach their children about home safety.

Speaking to E News, Song said that she was focused on teaching the kids about the concept of stranger danger, and described to them that "they're a stranger if you don't know their name".

She added: “I was like, ‘It doesn't matter if they're someone's parents. If you don't know their name, or you've never seen them before at our house, they are a stranger". More on this story here.

Back in January, Macauley Culkin paid tribute to his Home Alone co star, Catherine O'Hara, who passed away aged 71 following a short illness.

O'Hara played Culkin's on screen mother in the franchise, as well as starring in Schitt's Creek.

Taking to Instagram, Culkin wrote: "Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you but I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later". More on this here.

Last month, Brenda Fricker who starred in Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, passed away aged 81.

She was renowned for becoming the first Irish actress to win an Oscar, following her performance in My Left Foot. More on this story here.
