Margot Robbie has described Jacob Elordi as “probably a very good boyfriend” after a thoughtful Valentine’s Day surprise he organised while the pair were filming their upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

The actors, who star as Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff in the new screen version of Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel, reflected on their time working together in a recent joint interview ahead of the film’s release. Among the memories shared was an elaborate on-set gesture from Elordi, 28, that left a lasting impression on his co-star.

Robbie, 35, revealed that filming coincided with Valentine’s Day, and although she hadn’t expected anything special, Elordi went out of his way to turn the moment into something memorable — even though he wasn’t scheduled to work that day.

“We were shooting on Valentine's Day. You made my day and, as Heathcliff, filled my room with roses,” Robbie recalled. The surprise went far beyond flowers. According to Robbie, the display included a handwritten note written in character as Heathcliff, as well as a small tombstone prop — a darkly romantic nod to the gothic themes and emotional intensity of Wuthering Heights.

The scale and symbolism of the gesture immediately stood out to her. “You definitely beat me. Yours was so epic,” she said. “I remember thinking on Valentine's Day, oh he's probably a very good boyfriend, 'cause there's a lot of thoughtfulness in this. You did a lot of very thoughtful things.”

She added that what struck her most was the effort behind it. “I loved how crafty it was. It felt meaningful. It felt dramatic.”

Elordi admitted that part of the challenge — and fun — was figuring out when Robbie would actually be on set, as he had the day off. He ultimately came in anyway, determined to pull off the surprise. While he jokingly noted that Robbie hadn’t done anything in return, there were no hard feelings.

“I felt like I beat you,” he said, clearly pleased with himself. The exchange reflects the close working relationship the two actors developed while bringing one of literature’s most emotionally charged romances to the screen. Wuthering Heights tells the story of Catherine and Heathcliff, childhood companions whose deep bond is repeatedly fractured by class divisions, pride and resentment, leading to one of the most tragic love stories in English literature.

In a separate interview earlier this year, Elordi spoke about moments on set where the intensity of that relationship felt almost tangible. “There'd be a moment where we'd be running hand-in-hand through the moors, maybe not even in the scene, just setting it up, where I'd look across at her and she'd be looking at me and you really realized you are looking at Catherine and she was looking at Heathcliffe,” he said.

“And in that moment, we really were a part of their love, for real.”

He went on to describe a sense that the emotional weight of Brontë’s story lingered around them during filming. “You can almost imagine that the spirit of this love that Brontë created is sort of floating around there. It really did feel like we were catching little pieces of that unrequited love.”

The new adaptation arrives at a pivotal moment for both actors. Robbie, who has been married to producer Tom Ackerley since 2016, remains one of the most influential figures in Hollywood following the massive success of Barbie, while continuing to balance acting and producing roles. Elordi, meanwhile, has rapidly evolved from teen drama star to leading man, with acclaimed performances across film and television. He recently ended his relationship with Olivia Jade Giannulli in the autumn of 2025, and has since kept his personal life largely private.

Set for release on February 13, just ahead of Valentine’s Day, Wuthering Heights positions itself as both a classic literary adaptation and a dark, emotionally charged counterpoint to traditional romantic films. The chemistry between its two leads — both on screen and behind the scenes — is already drawing attention.
