Some famous items used by Mel Gibson on the Braveheart set are up for sale at a Co Meath auction.
These items are from the Meath property where the actor stayed during filming in Ireland, including his antique four poster bed, which will go up for auction next week. This auction is run by publican Gerry Brady, and will be hosted online next Tuesday (January 27).
Braveheart was filmed in locations such as Trim Castle and the Wicklow Mountains, and the bed used by Gibson when he stayed in the Trim house called St Martin's will be the centerpiece at this auction, including the wooden bed and other furnishings from the room.
Speaking about the auction, Gerry Brady revealed that Mel Gibson, made a personal visit last year to celebrate the film's anniversary, where he posed for photographs with Mr Brady and his family.
Mr Brady said: “He was kind enough to return to the property last year to celebrate the 30th anniversary. It was wonderful to reconnect".
The publican also explained how he was sworn to secrecy about the making of the film while shooting was taking place in 1994.
“It was an interesting moment in our lives, and we were under strict orders not to talk about it at the time", he said.
He continued: “There was the usual chaos of having so many people in the home, and myself and the family tried to make ourselves scarce".
“On one occasion, Mel locked himself out of his bedroom, which unfortunately featured a decorative, but very solid, steel door".
“He was keen on phoning the fire department. But we convinced him that we could break in through the window instead, so thankfully the door is still standing".
The house in St Martins was furnished as a result of a keenly followed hobby of Mr Brady's and his wife Phylis, who love attending Irish autions.
This particular auction is being run by auctioneer Niall Mullen, the Easylive Sale by Gormley Art Auctions, which also includes a 60 year long collection of furniture, art, porcelain, glass and pub memorabilia. The furniture includes pieces from the Victorian, Edwardian and Regency periods, as well as Art Noveau.
The auction will also include items such as a crouching marble statue of Venus Humewood Castle, formerly of the Hume family. An old jockey scales by Youngs of London from Headford House in Kells, are also included.
The items will go under the hammer from 5pm, Tuesday, January 27. Anyone keen on looking at them at St Martin's can do so up until that date.
Mel Gibson starred in and directed Braveheart, which went on win five Academy Awards, including a Best Director award for Gibson, who played Scottish rebel William Wallace in the 1995 release.
Back in August, Gibson credited the hospitality of Ireland with making Braveheart the success that it was. More on this here.
