Moments after winning a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics, Sturla Holm Laegreid made the shock revelation that he had cheated on his girlfriend.
This comes after the Norwegian came third in the biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting on Tuesday. His fellow Norwegian, Johan-Olav Bton won gold, with France's Eric Perrot taking the silver medal.
In an emotional TV interview for Norwegian state broadcaster, NRK, Laegreid said that he already "had a gold medal" up until last week, before squandering it by being unfaithful.
"There's someone I wanted to share it with who might not be watching today", Laegreid said.
"Six months ago, I met the love of my life - the most beautiful and kindest person in the world", he continued. "Three months ago, I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her. I told her about it a week ago. It's been the worst week of my life".
He added: "I had a gold medal in my life, and there are probably many who look at me with different eyes, but I only have eyes for her," he added. "Sport has taken a slightly different place [in my life the last few days. I wish I could share it with her".
Laegreid later added that he might not have been in the right frame of mind to give this interview after the race, which came following the death of his teammate, Sivert Guttorm Bakken last December.
"Maybe it was really selfish of me to give that interview," he said a few hours later. "So yeah, I don't know. I was, I'm a bit, I don't know... I'm not really here mentally", he said. "So yeah, we will see what happens".
