Fifteen years after its release, Crazy, Stupid, Love. remains one of the most beloved rom-coms of the 2010s — and now star Steve Carell has revealed that its now-iconic title was actually a last-minute decision.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight to mark the film’s 15th anniversary, Carell admitted he wasn’t always sold on the name.

“I never liked that title but I do now. When Dan Fogelman wrote it, he didn't title it. He didn't call it anything, it was 'untitled Dan Fogelman Project.'

Everybody had an idea as to what the movhe should be called and no one could come up with only one. So finally Warner Bros. just said, we're calling it 'Crazy, Stupid, Love.'

But I'm convinced that if a movie is good people will like the title. Doesn't even matter what you call it.”

It’s hard to imagine the film being called anything else now.

Released in 2011, the romantic comedy — written by Dan Fogelman and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa — went on to become a commercial and cultural hit.

The story follows Cal Weaver (Carell), a middle-aged man blindsided when his wife Emily, played by Julianne Moore, asks for a divorce. Reeling from the collapse of his marriage, Cal forms an unlikely friendship with smooth-talking bachelor Jacob Palmer, portrayed by Ryan Gosling, who attempts to reinvent him as a confident single man. The film weaves together multiple romantic storylines — including a now-famous twist linking the characters — balancing slapstick humour with surprisingly heartfelt emotion.

The ensemble cast also featured Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Bacon and Analeigh Tipton, helping to elevate it beyond a standard romantic comedy.

Financially, the film was a clear success. Made on a reported budget of around $50 million, it grossed approximately $145 million worldwide, more than doubling its production cost and solidifying its place as one of the standout rom-coms of its era. Over time, it has developed a loyal fanbase, frequently rewatched on streaming platforms and cable television.

One of the film’s most enduring moments — Gosling’s shirtless “Dirty Dancing” lift attempt with Stone — became an instant pop culture reference, while Carell’s awkward sincerity anchored the emotional core of the story. The blend of comedy and genuine heartbreak struck a chord with audiences navigating modern relationships.

For Carell, the film came during a pivotal moment in his career. Already widely known for his role as Michael Scott in The Office, he was transitioning from small-screen comedy star to leading man in major studio films. Projects like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Little Miss Sunshine and later Foxcatcher showcased his range, but Crazy, Stupid, Love. demonstrated his ability to carry a romantic lead with both humour and vulnerability.

Since then, Carell has continued to balance comedy and drama, earning an Academy Award nomination for Foxcatcher and starring in projects ranging from political satire to prestige television. Yet Crazy, Stupid, Love. remains one of his most warmly remembered performances.

As he put it, if the movie is good, the title almost doesn’t matter. In the case of Crazy, Stupid, Love., audiences clearly agreed.
