"JUST&T MARRIED!" signs on giant screens on buildings outside the gardens initially announced that the ceremony was completed, before Swift's publicist confirmed the news by email at around 7.20pm local time. However the pair are reported to have had an earlier secret wedding.
The guestlist, supposedly over 1,000 people long, saw celebrities such as Ed Sheeran, Jennifer Lopez, Jimmy Fallon, Camila Cabello and Graham Norton.
To enter the wedding guests had to show electronic tickets for verification, much like entering one of the pairs concerts or sports games.
Those without tickets were in the crowd around the Garden's where many people held up congratulatory signs or wore friendship bracelets. One woman had a pink and white bracelet that said "Team Bride".
Jane Lowry a Texan high-school student climbed the scaffolding of a building across the road from Madison Square Gardens to get a better view of the ceremony.
Lowry said that she really liked Swifts music and that was part of the reason why she wanted to see the celebrity on her special day. Lowry explained that many of Swift's songs have been written about relationships and thinks its likely that Swift would write "cute" songs about her wedding.
Derry designer Jonathan Anderson is praised to be the creative mind behind the ceremonial wear at what has been dubbed "America's Royal Wedding".
Anderson is the creative director of Dior Women's, Men's and Haute Couture Collections.
The couple wore custom Louboutin shoes with their Dior clothes as well as Cartier jewellery.
