Lionsgate has revealed a new Hunger Games prequel, and fans are buzzing after a dramatic teaser dropped for Sunrise on the Reaping. Set for release on November 20, 2026, the film adapts Suzanne Collins’s forthcoming novel and goes back in time to show Panem on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games — the infamous “Second Quarter Quell.”
The teaser, which has gone viral online, opens with an intriguing reaping scene, holds the most gorgeous photography for 2:30 - very promising for the fim - and concludes with a volcano erupting. From the flames emerges a snake intertwined with a mockingjay — a haunting symbol of the tensions to come. A familiar voice, believed to be that of Woody Harrelson (who originally played Haymitch), warns: “I think these games are going to be different.”
Francis Lawrence, who directed the last four Hunger Games movies, is in talks to return behind the camera. Lionsgate’s production team will again include Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, continuing their work under the Color Force banner.
Casting hasn’t been fully revealed yet, but word is out that the new film will explore a younger generation — with a fresh-look Haymitch Abernathy at its centre.
The “Second Quarter Quell” storyline promises political intrigue, rebellion, and the ruthless spectacle the series is known for. Collins herself has said the novel is inspired by ideas around power, propaganda, and how easily people can be controlled.
This will be the sixth major movie in the Hunger Games film franchise and the next chapter in Panem’s story — building on the success of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
For fans who thought the arena saga was done — this teaser makes it pretty clear: the games are far from over.
