Wayne Rooney has taken to social media to pay tribute to his wife Coleen on her 40th birthday, hailing her as "the best wife and mum we could wish for".

The former footballer shared a series of photos on Instagram, which date back to their early years together. The post also includes some family photos, such as a trip to see Oasis live on stage at their reunion tour, as well as Coleen with the children when they were younger.

The couple who have been together since their teens, have been married since 2008, and share four sons, 16 year old Kai, 12 year old Klay, 10 year old Kit, and eight year old Cass.

He also added the following caption.

“Happy 40th Birthday to the best wife and mum we could wish for", he said. “We can’t wait to celebrate with you and love you all the world @coleen_rooney".

They also erected a large marquee in the garden of the couple's home in Cheshire, which suggests that a party may be planned to celebrate Coleen's milestone.

Last September, Wayne Rooney credited Coleen with saving his life, suggesting that he would be dead if it was not for his wife.

Speaking to former Man United and England team mate Rio Ferdinand on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Rooney said it was his wife who saved him, helping him with his issues with alcohol, having revealed that he would "drink for two days straight" during the peak of his playing career.

On the podcast, Rooney admitted that he would often  "come to training and at the weekend I'd score two goals and then I'd go back and go and drink for two days straight again".

The former player said Coleen "helped me control that massively" and "managed me because I needed managing".
