Australian endurance athlete Joanna Wietrzyk has publicly apologized following a widely discussed incident during a Hyrox competition in Beijing.
Wietrzyk, a leading athlete and world record holder, crossed the finish line in first place during the event. However, footage from the competition sparked significant debate online after viewers noticed that she appeared to have suffered a medical issue while competing but remained in the race.

The incident attracted criticism from both spectators and fellow athletes, with many questioning whether she should have withdrawn from the competition and whether event officials should have intervened. Concerns were also raised regarding hygiene and participant safety, given the use of shared equipment throughout the race.
Just yesterday, Wietrzyk released a statement to Instagram expressing regret over her decision to continue competing. She acknowledged that, in hindsight, leaving the course would have been the more appropriate action and accepted responsibility for the discomfort and disruption caused by the situation.

"I felt completely fit and healthy at the start of the race, with no reason to expect any illness. Looking back, I regret the decision to not have stepped off the track."
As part of her response, Wietrzyk announced that she would voluntarily withdraw her result from the race and forfeit the ranking points she had earned "On reflection, I have decided to retroactively withdraw from the race and forfeit the points I earned."
The controversy also prompted a response from Hyrox organizers who apologised "To all that were directly or indirectly affected."

Hyrox, an international fitness racing series that combines running with functional workout stations, has grown rapidly in popularity since its launch and hosts events across multiple countries. Competitors alternate between running segments and demanding exercise challenges using shared equipment.
In her closing remarks, Wietrzyk thanked supporters who had reached out during the controversy and said she planned to take time away from competition to focus on recovery, reflection, and spending time with her family.
