Galway footballer Seán Fitzgerald has stepped away from the county panel as he pursues a potential place on the upcoming series of Love Island, marking a surprising crossover between inter-county GAA and reality television.
The 25-year-old Bearna clubman, who joined the Galway senior set-up in 2022, had established himself in the Tribesmen’s defensive unit in recent seasons and featured prominently in their championship campaign earlier this year.

He played the full 70 minutes in Galway’s Connacht Senior Football Championship semi-final win over Leitrim, before being left out of the matchday squad for the provincial final defeat to Roscommon.
Fitzgerald’s absence from the panel has now been linked to his reported selection for the final stages of casting for ITV’s Love Island, which is set to begin in Majorca on June 1.
According to reports, the primary school teacher has been shortlisted for the dating show after gaining significant traction on social media, where he has built a large following across platforms including TikTok and Instagram.
He has amassed nearly 95,000 TikTok followers, with his content generating over 4.4 million likes since he joined the platform in 2020, alongside a further 25,000+ followers on Instagram.
Fitzgerald’s online presence has played a key role in boosting his profile beyond sport, with one video posted in February widely shared in recent days after being framed as a kind of “application” for the reality show.
In the clip, he joked about his suitability for villa life, referencing “all of my undiagnosed whatever I have” while performing a series of dance routines. He also spoke about his personality, suggesting he would bring humour, pranks and entertainment to the show, particularly around the dynamics of coupling up in the villa.
He also told viewers he would enjoy winding up fellow contestants while they were “coupling up or getting active.”

Away from social media, Fitzgerald works as a primary school teacher, a role supporters say fits with his high-energy personality and strong communication style.
His growing online profile has already seen him signed by influencer agency Marvel, which describes him as a creator who is unafraid to offer opinions on topical issues in a humorous way and highlights his interests in travel, sport, music and fashion.
In previous interviews, Fitzgerald has also been open about what he looks for — and doesn’t look for — in people.

Speaking to RSVP Live, he said he is put off by arrogance and dishonesty.
He explained: “It would have to be cockiness or people who are two-faced. There’s a fine line between confidence and cockiness, and when people are on the side of cockiness, it’s very off-putting.”
He added: “With regard to two-faced people, I can’t stand them. If I find out someone who I’m friendly with is bad mouthing me behind my back, I won’t talk to them again.”
If Fitzgerald does make it onto Love Island, he would follow in the footsteps of other Irish sports figures who have appeared on the show, including Leitrim hurler Dylan Towolawi and former rugby sevens internationals Conor Phillips and Greg O’Shea.
Greg O’Shea went on to win the 2019 series alongside Amber Gill, despite entering the villa later in the competition, with the pair ultimately becoming one of the show’s most high-profile winners.
