A newly commissioned large-scale mural at the Stoney Steps in Kinsale celebrates the legendary pirate Anne Bonny.

The Kinsale Tourism and Business Association had asked the public for ideas for a mural on the steps, with the theme of Anne Bonny ultimately chosen.

Street artists Splattervan were commissioned to paint the mural, with funding provided by the Bandon Kinsale Municipal District Town Development Fund.

Speaking at the mural's unveiling, Cllr. Kevin Murphy, Chair of Bandon-Kinsale Municipal District, said "The wonderful harbour town of Kinsale has benefitted from another beautiful addition through this painting. These steps, favoured by visiting photographers, now boast a mural which will resonate with many locals and visitors to Kinsale today. Legends of Anne Bonny, one of the town’s most illustrious expats, resonate with the rebels and adventurers in us all, and the artists have done a remarkable job in bringing this legendary Irish Pirate back to her home on the Wild Atlantic Way."

Said to have been born at the Old Head of Kinsale in 1697, Bonny is one of history's few known female pirates. She became involved in piracy when she married her husband James Bonny, fighting alongside a band of male pirates in the Caribbean. She recently appeared as a main character in the TV show Black Sails.
