Justin Trudeau has explained his reasons for missing his native Canada's opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
This comes after the former Canadian Prime Minister was criticised for missing the game at a tournament where Canada are one of the hosts, alongside the US and Mexico.
However, on social media, Mr Trudeau cited "supportive boyfriend duties" as the reason for missing Canada's clash with Bosnia & Herzegovina, having opted to support his girlfriend, Katy Perry, who was performing at the US opening ceremony.
The match ended 1-1, with Canada's Cyle Larin scoring a second half equaliser.
"Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup", Trudeau wrote on X, along with an emoji of the Canadian flag.
Katy Perry who has been dating Mr Trudeau since last Decemer, was one of several artists performing at the opening ceremony in LA, along with rapper, Future, Tyla, as well as Brazilian singer Anitta and Blackpink star, Lisa. This also marked the first World Cup game held in the USA since 1994.
It was also the same day that Canada held their opening ceremony, which took place in Toronto, where Michael Buble and Alanis Morrisette performed.
