The Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) is advising Irish holidaymakers travelling to parts of southern Europe affected by ongoing wildfires to remain vigilant, follow the guidance of local authorities and stay informed throughout their trips.
The warning comes as wildfires continue to impact areas of Spain and south-west France, with the potential for travel disruption, road closures, evacuations and changes to transport services. While the ITAA stressed that the vast majority of holiday destinations remain unaffected and continue to operate as normal, travellers are being encouraged to monitor official advice and be prepared to adapt their plans if necessary.
The association is urging holidaymakers to keep up to date with local news, follow instructions issued by emergency services, accommodation providers and tour representatives, and check the latest travel advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs before departure and while overseas. Travellers are also encouraged to register their stay abroad with the Department of Foreign Affairs so they can be contacted by the Irish Embassy in the event of an unforeseen crisis.
The ITAA recommends that travellers keep their mobile phones charged and roaming enabled to receive emergency alerts, contact their travel agent or tour operator if their destination is affected, and ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance that includes cover for travel disruption.
Holidaymakers are also advised to keep passports, medication, travel documents and other essential belongings easily accessible in case they are instructed to evacuate, avoid travelling into areas where wildfires are active, and follow all official road closures and evacuation routes.
“Wildfires can develop quickly and conditions can change within a very short period of time,” said Clare Dunne, CEO of the ITAA. “The most important advice for Irish holidaymakers is to follow the instructions of local authorities and emergency services, remain aware of developments in their area and avoid travelling to affected locations.”
Dunne also reminded travellers to seek assistance if their plans are disrupted.
“If your travel plans are disrupted, contact your travel agent or tour operator as soon as possible. They are there to support you before, during and after your holiday and can assist with alternative arrangements where required. We also encourage travellers to ensure they have appropriate travel insurance in place and to familiarise themselves with what their policy covers before they travel.”
The ITAA emphasised that, although wildfires are currently affecting parts of Spain and France, the disruption remains largely localised and most visitors can continue to enjoy their holidays safely.
