Choosing to deliberately drive down the wrong way on a motorway is akin to attempted murder, Fianna Fáil MEP, Billy Kelleher was warned.
Mr Kelleher's comments come after a serious crash along the M9 near Moone, Co Kildare saw the death of five teenage boys, after the car they were travelling went down the wrong way along the motorway, colliding with another vehicle driven by a family, which included sisters Alma and Niamh Kinsella, their sister, Ella Hendricken and their seven year old nephew.
The teenagers were identified as Kamil Pustkowski (17) from Limerick; Jack Kennedy (17) from Athy, Co Kildare; Jeremy O’Brien, who was in his late teens and from Carlow; Joe Carthy (15) from Athy; and Alex McCarthy (17) from Carlow.
"Applying penalty points to licenses many of these criminals don’t have is futile. Crimes, and they are most clearly crimes, of this nature must result in a custodial sentence to reflect the severity of the crime". (All quotes according to RTÉ).
It was also confirmed that a GoFundMe page was set up for the sisters who were injured following the collision, which has seen celebrities like Garron Noone, Roz Purcell, Chris De Burgh and Laura Fox all generously donate.
