The settled summer weather that has brought weeks of dry conditions and high temperatures is set to come to an end, with a major change in Ireland’s weather expected from the middle of this week.

Leading weather experts are warning of a much more unsettled spell, with heavy rain and thundery showers expected across parts of the country.

Weather Alerts Ireland has warned that some areas could see more than 60mm of rain over the coming week.

The weather models are also showing the potential for an even wetter period to follow, with up to 100mm or more forecast in some areas.

Weather Alerts Ireland said: “A major change in the weather is expected from midweek, with much more unsettled conditions developing. Heavy rain and thundery showers are likely at times, with some areas potentially seeing 60mm+ of rain over the next week.”

The forecaster warned that the increased rainfall could lead to localised flooding in some parts of the country.

It added: “Another very wet period could then follow, with models currently showing up to 100mm+ in places. Risk of localised flooding is increasing.”

The change will bring an end to the prolonged spell of settled summer weather, with rainfall levels expected to increase significantly as August draws to a close.

According to the GFS weather model, some parts of Ireland could record more than 70mm of rain between the final days of August and the beginning of September.
