Providing just two items can make your back garden a singing haven for birds this Autumn, according to experts.

Experts have said that making birds feel safe and well-fed is the key, with high energy the best way to get a tune out of birds. They also said that listening to songbirds can improve mental health and lower physical stress.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), offering certain types of food such as nyjer seeds, sunflower seeds and mealworms can provide vital energy they will need to protect their territories through song. They also said that planting berry rich shrubs such as holly and rowan can also provide a natural food source that keeps them coming back.

Meanwhile, the Natural History Museum have reported that people can even reset by paying attention to common back garden birds. They also said that apps such as Urban Mind can improve the mental well being from hearing birds, lasting up to eight hours.

The other vital ingredient required for a happy garden is water, with the RSPB reporting that a shallow bird bath with moving water can be a huge help here, with the sound of trickling or splashing water an attraction for them. Birds use water to drink and clean their feathers, keeping them healthy and able to sing.

Safety

However, birds will only sing if they feel they are in a safe environment, and not in danger of coming under attack by predators like cats and hawks.

The Woodland Trust said that growing dense hedges and thick bushes can be ideal for birds to hid and build their nests. They also said that leaving one messy corner in your garden with fallen leaves and dead wood can also help, while leaving tasty insects for the birds to eat.

Nest boxes on walls or trees can also encourage birds to settle in your yard permanently.

These steps, can help your garden to quickly thrive into a nature reserve.

In just a few weeks, you will be able to walk outside and enjoy a marvellous, free concert on your own doorstep.

Some fun facts, the male blackbird is thought to be one of if not the best singers in the UK, making a deep, smooth almost flute like sound when singing. It can be heard from the top branch of a tree when the sun is setting.

The thrush bird is also a loud singer, known for repeating the same musical phrases three or four times before it changes into something different.

Elsewhere, the blackcap, known as "Northern Nightingale", has a clear song, beginning with a nice, quiet sound, before getting louder and more intense in the end. Other popular feathered popstars, are the Eurasian Wren, European robin and European goldfinch.
