Riverdance star, Michael Flatley has spoken out for the first time since he announced the death of his beloved wife, Niamh.

Flatley's wife, Niamh died on Monday aged 52 following illness. She was 52 years old, which led to widespread shock and sadness.

Announcing her death, Flatley had previously said that his "heart is broken", saying on social media that Niamh was "the most loving mother, wife and person, and our lives will never be the same without her".

Ahead of her wake today, Michael Flatley spoke about the huge outpouring of kindness and sympathy that he and his family have received during what has undoubtedly been a difficult week to say the least.

"We are deeply touched by the kindness and compassion shown by the people of Fermoy", Flatley wrote. "To those who have taken the time to leave flowers at the gates of Castlehyde, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your beautiful gestures of sympathy and support mean more to our family than words can express".

Elsewhere, Flatley also revealed that he and their son, Michael St James have lowered the flag at Castlehyde, "in memory of their beloved Niamh".

Flatley's message received a further outpouring of supportive messages from the public, including Nuala Carey, who wrote: "I'm so sorry for your loss".

"Niamh struck me as a real lady. I saw you both walking together in Ballsbridge once. Both so comfortable in each other's company. My deepest sympathies to you. Michael and Michael St James", she added.

A second person added: "Niamh was a beautiful lady, and I'm so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you, Michael and Michael St James, and all your family and friends. Thinking of you and sending love". (All quotes according to Evoke).

Niamh O'Brien will repose at Ryan's Funeral Home in Ashbourne, Meath from 4pm to 7pm today. Her funeral mass will take place on Saturday morning October 10, at the Church of St Thérèse, Mount Merrion at 11am, which will be followed by a private family burial.
