E-Cigarettes And Vapes Are 3,000 Times Dirtier Than Loo Seats

A new warning from scientists suggests that e-cigarettes, or vapes, could be far more germ-ridden than many expect — with some devices carrying up to 3,000 times more microscopic bugs than the average toilet seat.

In lab tests, researchers discovered that the warm, moist environment of a vape mouthpiece rapidly becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi if not cleaned properly. Every puff and touch, according to Reynold Mpofu, a microbiologist at independent lab BioLabTests, contributes to the buildup. “This evidence highlights the critical importance of regular cleaning and exceptional hygiene for vape devices,” he said.

To study how quickly microbes can multiply, scientists swabbed a strawberry-ice-flavoured Lost Mary vape at multiple time points — right after opening, and then again after 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, one week and two weeks of use. They observed a dramatic uptick in microbial colonies after just two to three days, with the number of organisms rising by thousands in a short span.

These findings raise notable health concerns, especially at a time when vaping remains hugely popular: in the UK alone, there are an estimated 5.4 million regular vape users. Many see vaping as a safer alternative to smoking, but this new research suggests device hygiene is a serious and overlooked risk.

Previous research also backs up the idea that vaping disrupts users’ microbial environments. A study of nasal samples, for instance, found that e-cigarette users had altered nasal microbiomes, with higher levels of potentially harmful bacteria versus non-smokers, and signs of immune disruption in the respiratory tract.

The bottom line? Clean your vape - or quit vaping. Experts recommend disassembling and washing removable parts, like the mouthpiece and tank, and taking steps to prevent the moist, warm conditions that microorganisms thrive in.
