A man in his forties who is believed to have been responsible for the high speed ramming of a Garda patrol car in the vicinity of Knocknacarra on Wednesday night has been arrested.

At 8.30pm on Wednesday Gardaí were patrolling the Western Distributor Road when they approached a black Audi A5 car at Altan. When they activated their flashing blue lights the driver immediately sped straight towards the patrol car. The Gardaí attempted to avoid collision but the patrol car was rammed at speed on the passenger side. The driver of the Audi subsequently fled down the Western Distributor Road.

Gardaí followed in the direction of the Audi, which they found abandoned in Knocknacarra.

Two Gardaí suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalisation.

A man in his 40s was arrested on Thursday afternoon at Galway Courthouse in connection with the incident. He is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at North Western Regional Headquarters in Murrough.
