Parents Feel More Connected With Their Kids When Sharing An Interest In Music Artists

Family members form better bonds and are less likely to argue with one another when they listen to music together, according to research.

A new study has found that family members form better bonds and are less likely to argue with one another when they listen to music together. A shared interest in music seems to be the key to a happy family as 42% believe it brings their loved ones closer together, while 22% feel it can reduce disagreements.

Rather than being the influencer, 80% of parents feel their kids have introduced them to more music through streaming platforms like YouTube and TikTok. The research reveals that 44% of parents feel most connected to their children when sharing an interest in a favourite artist, while 36% sing along with their children.

A poll carried out by Virgin Media found that 59% of parents have learned to understand their children more through listening to their musical influences. 62% feel they can now see things from their point of view and 58% say it helps them relate to their children in a different way.

This research was done to highlight Club Rewind, inter-city club experiences which took place simultaneously in London and Glasgow on Wednesday September 22nd. Speaking to Ministry of Sound ahead of their sets, Ibiza legend Pete Tong and his DJ daughter Becky reminisced on the past decade of Ibiza.

Since Becky was young, we have always connected over music, it’s great that she’s making a career from it now too,” Pete recalls. “But before that, there have been countless occasions where we’ve introduced one another to music or artists we love, and it was just something we could enjoy together.”

People may connect in many different genres, but pop comes as the most popular at 24%. However, families can connect through a shared love for any music, including soul (10%), disco (11%) and dance (9%). Of people aged 21-22, 24% go clubbing with their parents, while 12% said they would love to do so.

55% of parents take their children to concert with them, while according to OnePoll data, 76% of parents who have done so thought it was the best experience of their lives. 

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “This research shows the connective power of music and its role in bringing generations together – whether that’s experiencing the first gig with a parent or sharing song recommendations with family members.
