Progress has been made on the development of Athenry's new Gaelscoil campus.

Galway East Independent TD Sean Canney has revealed that the Department of Education has confirmed that they have appointed a design team to the project.

"The project includes the delivery of two new schools consisting of a national school at the site of the former Clarin College," Canney said.

The development of the Gaelscoil has been delegated to the leadership of the Galway & Roscommon Education and Training Board.

The new campus will bring Coláiste an Eachreidh and Gaelscoil Riada together on one site. It will accommodate over 500 students.

When the design team have completed their work, a planning application will need to be lodged.

"This project is the final piece in the jigsaw for the delivery of modern facilities with the Presentation College and Clarin College both now complete and operational, representing a capital investment in excess of €40 million for Athenry and the catchment," said Canney.
