Schitt's Creek star Emily Hampshire has apologised amid controversy over her choice of Halloween costumes.

The actress caused a storm after she dressed up as Johnny Depp for Halloween, while a friend dressed up as Amber Heard, in reference to the former couple's hostile marriage, much publicised divorce, and subsequent court case.

Last year, Depp filed a successful lawsuit against his ex wife, over an article which the Heard had published in the Washington Post in 2018, alleging that Depp has abused her throughout their marriage. The couple tied the knot in 2015, before divorcing in 2017.

Following this, Hampshire has issued a grovelling apology via Instagram, where she branded her conduct as "thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant".

“I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I’ve ever done”, she began.

“For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard”, Hampshire continued. “I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny”.

“These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my actions”.
