Jamie Dornan Among Honorary Graduates At Queen's University Belfast

Jamie Dornan was among several honorary doctorates who were recognised at Queen's University Belfast earlier this week.

The actor was among nine honorary graduates who were awarded at QUB, "for putting Northern Ireland on the map".

Fifty Shades of Grey star Dornan, was one of the graduates recognised for distinctions in the fields of medicine, education, business, sport, arts, public service, and the local community.

On receiving this honour, Dornan said, "My dad went to this university, there are pictures in my house of my dad wearing a similar robe. I’m very proud to be involved in this great university". 

Sky Sports and former Aston Martin F1 strategist Bernadette Collins was also among those graduates recognised at the university for sport.

Elsewhere, Quinten Oliver who developed the Yes campaign for the Good Friday Agreement referendum, and former SDLP leader Mark Durkan were also honoured at the event for distinction in public service.

Marie Lacey who founded the Belfast Community Choir, was also recognised for her services to the arts, while Ann McGregor who served as chief executive of Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry for 15 years, also earned a Doctor of Science in Economics for services to business and commerce.

Also receiving a Doctor of Science in Economics for services to business and commerce was Garret Curran, recognising his career of over 30 years including several leadership roles in various blue-chip enterprises, and supporting smaller high growth companies.

Mr Curran was praised by QUB for his passionate support of inclusive education, and charity work, including his role as board member of the Queen's University Foundation Board.

Ajay Kakkar was honoured for her work at improving healthcare. She received a doctorate for medical science, and distinction in medicine. 

"We are delighted to award honorary degrees to this group of hugely successful and inspirational group of individuals today", said Professor Ian Greer, QUB's President and Vice Chancellor. "They have all played a significant role in putting Belfast and Northern Ireland on the map and we are honoured that they will be part of the Queen’s community".
