A local GAA club in Galway was left in mourning after young Camogie player Kate Moran died during a match.

A spokesperson for her club Athenry paid tribute to Moran.

“Kate began playing with Athenry Camogie Club at underage level and quickly progressed to Senior A level with great distinction. She holds a Feile, Minor County and Intermediate County title”.

“She played in a club All Ireland Intermediate final, won two All Irelands at U16 level with Galway, both titles she was incredibly proud of".

Moran was reportedly struck by a sliotar and swinging hurley. Moran had been playing for her club against Ardrahan when the tragic incident took place.

The match was abandoned and three ambulences were called to the scene. Kate Moran was taken to Galway University Hospital. She was taken to intensive care, before dying yesterday.

Councillar Albert Dolan who attended primary and secondary school with Moran called her death, "a massive shock to the community".

“I don’t think that there are any words to express just how terrible this must be for Kate’s family”, he told Galway Beo. “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this tragic time”.

Councillar Shelly Quinn also said that the community of Athenry are  “deeply saddened by the news as a community”.
