Gardaí are investigating an attempted burglary of a supermarket in North Cark where a JCB was used to smash into the front entrance as the raiders tried to steal an ATM.

The JCB was used to smash into the Cork supermarket and rob its ATM cash machine. It was reported that the JCB front loader was stolen and driven into the supermarket.

The incident, which happened during the early hours of Tuesday morning, saw raiders attempt to smash through the steel security shutters in front of the supermarket at approximately 1.30am. The machine was reportedly used to tear out the ATM in order to gain access to the cash storage facility.

However, the gang were unable to circumvent the shutters and several steel traffic security poles, and they subsequently fled in a waiting car after being unable to access the supermarket. It was also reported that the cash machine was empty following the June Bank Holiday weekend.

Gardaí are examining the crime scene, while technical experts are conducting a full forensic examination in order to identify the perpetrators, with CCTV security camera footage from the Mallow town likely to prove crucial.
