An entire island off the coast of West Cork has gone on the market for less than the price of many three-bedroom homes, offering buyers the chance to own a private slice of Ireland.

Goat Island, located near Schull, is up for sale with an asking price of €275,000. Named after the small herd of goats that still roams the island, the unique property is attracting attention thanks to its surprisingly affordable price tag.

The 38-acre island is made up of two sections, Great Goat and Little Goat, which are connected by a narrow strip of land.

Despite its secluded setting, the island has several notable features, including a small cove that provides boat access, an old stone-built cottage and a historic beacon that once helped guide passing sailors. There is also a small sandy beach, although it is currently inaccessible.

Its asking price places it below the average cost of a home in Cork City, where properties now average around €420,000, and only slightly above the average house price across Cork County, which stands at €272,900, according to REA's Average House Price Index.

While building or renovating on a private island would come with obvious planning and logistical challenges, the listing presents a rare opportunity for someone looking for complete privacy in one of Ireland's most scenic coastal locations.

The property is being marketed by James Lyons O'Keeffe Auctioneers and Estate Agents.
