Dublin has secured a place among Ireland's favourite staycation destinations, according to new research commissioned by Enterprise Mobility, which found that more than half of Irish holidaymakers are planning to holiday at home this year.

The survey revealed that 56% of respondents intend to take a staycation in Ireland in 2026, highlighting the continued popularity of domestic travel. The research also found that flexibility and convenience remain key priorities, with access to a car playing a major role in how people experience their holidays.

More than four in ten respondents (42%) said that having a car while on holiday gives them the freedom to travel at their own pace. Meanwhile, 26% said it makes it easier to visit nearby towns and villages, while 19% valued the ability to reach more remote destinations such as rural areas, beaches and coastal attractions.

Ireland's most iconic attractions continue to draw visitors, with the Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry, and Giant's Causeway ranked among the country's must-see destinations. Many of these scenic locations are most easily accessed by road, making private transport an important part of the staycation experience.

When respondents were asked to name their favourite county for a staycation, Kerry topped the rankings with 17% of the vote. Galway followed in second place with 13%, while Dublin claimed third place with 12%. Cork and Donegal completed the top five, each receiving 9% of responses.

Regionally, Munster emerged as Ireland's most popular staycation destination, selected by 37% of respondents. Leinster ranked second with 27%, followed by Connacht at 22% and Ulster at 14%.

The study also highlighted some of the challenges people face when travelling by car. Traffic was identified as the biggest issue by 30% of respondents, while 22% said route navigation could be difficult. A further 18% noted that organising regular breaks during longer journeys can also be a challenge, particularly when travelling with family or larger groups.

Staycation preferences also varied across different age groups. Kerry proved especially popular among older travellers, with almost a quarter (23%) of those aged 65 and over naming it as their favourite county. Dublin, however, was particularly appealing to younger adults, with 18% of both 18-24-year-olds and 25-34-year-olds selecting the capital as their preferred staycation destination.

Commenting on the findings, Brendan Grieve, Vice President and General Manager for Enterprise Mobility Ireland, said the research demonstrates that staycations remain firmly on the agenda for Irish holidaymakers.

"The research shows that the Irish staycation continues to play an important role in people's summer plans. Flexibility is a major factor, with travellers wanting the freedom to explore multiple destinations and discover more of what Ireland has to offer.

"From the scenic landscapes of Kerry and Galway to the vibrant attractions of Dublin, as well as Cork and Donegal, each destination offers something unique. Whether it's a coastal road trip, a city escape or visiting family and friends, having access to the right vehicle helps people enjoy a more comfortable and flexible holiday experience."
