Revenue officials have seized over €1.5 million worth of herbal cannabis at Dublin Airport in two separate operations carried out on consecutive days this week.
On Sunday, 6 July, Revenue officers, acting on intelligence, discovered 52kg of herbal cannabis concealed in vacuum-packed packages in the luggage of two passengers arriving from the United States. The estimated street value of the drugs is €1,040,000.
A man in his 30s and a woman in her 40s, a mother and son, were arrested by Gardaí in connection with the discovery and have since appeared in court.
In a separate operation on Monday, 7 July, Revenue officers made another significant find, seizing approximately 23kg of herbal cannabis, worth an estimated €462,000. This seizure followed an alert from drug detection dog Jack and involved a passenger who had arrived from Thailand. The drugs were also concealed in vacuum-packed bags within the passenger’s luggage.
A man in his 30s was arrested by An Garda Síochána and is currently being detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at a Garda station in Dublin.
Revenue confirmed that both operations were intelligence-led and are part of ongoing efforts to disrupt organised crime networks and the trafficking of illegal drugs into the country. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
Authorities are urging the public and businesses with any information about drug smuggling or other illegal activity to contact Revenue’s confidential hotline at 1800 295 295.
