Parliament Street in Dublin city centre has been permanently pedestrianised from today, marking a major step in Dublin City Council’s Transport Plan to prioritise people over cars.

The section between Essex Quay and Essex Gate is now fully traffic-free, open only to pedestrians and cyclists. Road level in this area is being raised to match the pavement, improving accessibility and safety.

The adjoining stretch of Parliament Street between Essex Gate and Lord Edward Street has also been pedestrianised, with limited access for deliveries permitted between 6am and 11am daily.

Cycling will now be allowed in both directions along Parliament Street, and a new two-way cycle link is being created on the east side of Grattan Bridge, where traffic lanes are being reduced to a single right-turn lane.

Additional cycling improvements include:

  • A new two-way cycle link on Capel Street (between the quays and Strand Street Little)

  • Northbound cycling permitted on Capel Street, completing a continuous two-way cycle route between Dame Street and Bolton Street.

However, traffic between Essex Gate and Essex Street East will continue to flow west to east for all vehicles at all times.

Dublin City Council says the move is backed by strong public support, with 90% of respondents in a recent consultation favouring pedestrianisation. Feedback from locals and businesses highlighted calls for fewer cars, more green space, safer walking and cycling, and better conditions for outdoor dining and family activities.

Parliament Street already sees around 23,000 pedestrian movements daily, according to the council, which now plans to permanently reallocate the space for public use, including planting, seating and pop-up events.

To celebrate, a street market is being held today, with free family-friendly events planned on weekends throughout July, starting with a “Blossom and Bees” event tomorrow.

The council said many participants cited the success of nearby Capel Street as a model which is now one of the busiest and most vibrant pedestrian zones in the city.

Work on interim improvements such as new seating and greening will begin on 7 July and continue throughout the summer.
