A book of condolence has been opened at Galway County Hall to honour the life and legacy of the celebrated folk singer, Dolores Keane, who passed away at her home in Caherlistrane, County Galway, on Monday.

The 72-year-old musician was widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most distinctive voices, with a career that brought traditional Irish music to audiences around the globe.

The book of condolence was formally opened by the Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, Councillor David Collins, alongside the Chief Executive, Liam Conneally. Members of the public are invited to pay their respects by signing the book during normal office hours over the coming days. For those unable to visit in person, the book is also available online, allowing people from across Ireland and beyond to express their sympathies and share memories of the late singer.

Speaking at the opening, Councillor Collins paid tribute to Dolores Keane’s exceptional contribution to Irish music. He described her as having “one of the most distinctive and respected voices” in the country, noting that her artistry played a key role in promoting and developing Irish music both at home and internationally. “Dolores brought the music and spirit of County Galway to audiences around the world,” he said. “Her talent and dedication left a lasting mark on our cultural heritage, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her work.”

Keane’s career spanned several decades, during which she became a central figure in the Irish folk music scene. Her emotive voice and interpretive skill made her performances unforgettable, earning her recognition not only in Ireland but internationally. She inspired countless musicians and fans alike, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence the folk tradition today.

In addition to celebrating her musical achievements, the condolence book also offers a space for people to express support and sympathy to Keane’s family and friends. Her passing has left a profound sense of loss among those who admired her work and were touched by her music.

Dolores Keane’s funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 3 pm, following a funeral mass at St Patrick and St Cuana Church, Kilcoona. Friends, family, and fans will gather to celebrate her life, pay their final respects, and remember the extraordinary impact she had on Irish music and culture.
