Developed by Limerick City and County Council, the immersive experience allows users to explore the entire 40 km route from Rathkeale to Abbeyfeale, passing through Ardagh, Newcastle West and Templeglantine , via VR headsets, mobile devices and web platforms.

By blending high‑quality visual capture with interactive navigation, the initiative offers a realistic simulation of the journey through this scenic and historically rich part of Limerick.
The project was officially launched at the Limerick IT Summit 2026, held at the Dell Technologies Campus, marking a key milestone in the region’s efforts to integrate technology with tourism and cultural promotion.
Throughout the immersive tour, users can discover the natural beauty of the Greenway and key heritage and engineering sites. Highlights include the recently opened €2.48 million Limerick Greenway Hub at Rathkeale, the historic Ardagh Station House, the elegant Ferguson’s Viaduct, and the tranquil woodlands of Tullig Wood. These points of interest are brought to life through detailed 360‑degree capture and digital storytelling.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, said the virtual tour positions Limerick at the forefront of smart tourism and digital innovation in Ireland. “We are opening Limerick Greenway to the world,” Mayor Moran said. “Whether someone is planning a visit, learning about our history, or experiencing the route from afar, this initiative ensures Limerick is accessible, inclusive and globally connected.”
The VR project was delivered over an eight‑month collaboration between Global Virtual Asset Management Ltd. and the Tourism Department of Limerick City and County Council, involving extensive VR mapping and high‑resolution capture of the trail.
Dr. Pat Daly, Director General of Limerick City and County Council, noted that the timing of the launch aligns with growing international interest in the region, especially with the Ryder Cup coming to Adare in 2027. “This technology provides an innovative way for overseas audiences to explore Limerick in advance, discover the breadth of what the county offers, and plan extended stays beyond the event itself,” Dr. Daly said.
Since reopening in 2021 following a €10 million upgrade, Limerick Greenway has attracted around 1.5 million visits from both domestic and overseas visitors. With the launch of the VR tour, the Council hopes to significantly extend its reach and appeal.
