Adam Sandler is to receive an award for his comedic songwriting later this week.
The Happy Gilmore star is to be honoured by the American Society of Composers and Publishers later this week for his contributions to music and songwriting across comedy, film and popular culture at the ASCAP Experience day at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
This is an award which is given to songwriters and composures who have contributed to music and have inspired and influenced their fellow music creators. Other recipients of this award include Sir Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty, Patti Smith, Dr. Dre, Billy Joel, Diane Warren, Quincy Jones, Neil Young and Elvis Costello, among others.
Speaking about Sandler's inclusion, the ASCAP chairman of the board and president, Paul Williams released this statement.
"Adam is a giant of comedy, and so many of his most hilarious onscreen moments are based in music and song," Williams said. "From Opera Man to The Chanukah Song to Grow Old With You, Adam's genius ability to seamlessly blend comedy and music helps us all appreciate the wonders and absurdities of life and love. ASCAP is honoured to recognise Adam Sandler for his singular contributions to the comedy music canon".
Having been a member of the ASCAP member for more than three decades, Sandler has nearly 450 ASCAP-registered works, including a wide range of playful sing-songs. He has also performed several songs in films, including, Forgetful Lucy in 50 First Dates, and Grow Old With You from The Wedding Singer.
He is also renowned for his Saturday Night Live routines, including Lunchlady, The Thanksgiving Song, and Red Hooded Sweatshirt.
He has also released six albums over the years, with three of them receiving Grammy Award nominations, including Best Spoken Comedy Album.
Back in December, it was confirmed that Sandler would star alongside Julia Roberts, Colin Farrell, and Jennifer Lawrence as the Emmy Award winning franchise, Actors on Actors returns for a new season, as Variety and CNN revealed their line up for their first edition under this new collaboration.
