Britney Spears is reportedly willing to follow a new treatment plan as she faces the legal fallout from her recent arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to sources close to the situation, the 42-year-old pop star is hoping to avoid any potential jail time, with her team instead pushing for a court-mandated treatment programme. Insiders say the hope is that a judge will opt for rehabilitation and structured support rather than incarceration.

A source told ET that Spears’ team is currently working to put new safeguards in place after recent changes in her personal support system.

“Britney recently let go of her sober coaches and security guards. Her team is helping her reconfigure things and sorting out healthy ways to support her, including mental health services and detox programs.”

Those close to the singer say she understands the seriousness of the situation and is prepared to cooperate with whatever plan is put forward.

“Britney's team is hopeful that the judge mandates treatment for her rather than jail time. Britney is willing to comply with a new treatment and support plan.”

A representative for Britney Spears also addressed the incident publicly, acknowledging the seriousness of what happened and suggesting it could mark a turning point for the star.

“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

The spokesperson added that Spears’ loved ones are rallying around her following the arrest, with plans being discussed to create a more stable support structure moving forward.

“Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

The arrest comes during what has been a turbulent few years for the singer. Spears spent 13 years under a court-ordered conservatorship controlled primarily by her father, Jamie Spears, before it was officially terminated in November 2021 following the global #FreeBritney movement and intense legal scrutiny.

Since regaining control of her personal and financial affairs, the “…Baby One More Time” singer has been navigating life outside the strict legal structure that governed much of her adult life. While she has celebrated newfound independence, the period has also been marked by public scrutiny, personal upheaval and ongoing concern from fans about her wellbeing.

Spears has remained a defining figure in pop culture since rising to fame in the late 1990s, selling more than 100 million records worldwide and becoming one of the most recognisable pop stars of her generation. However, in recent years the focus surrounding the singer has often shifted from her music career to her personal life and legal battles.

Britney Spears Released, Scheduled To Appear In Court For DUI

Britney Spears has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) in California, as those in her inner circle hope the incident could mark the start of a “long overdue change” in the singer’s life.

The 44-year-old pop star was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol at around 9.30pm on Wednesday night in Ventura County after several 911 calls reporting erratic driving on the highway.

Authorities later confirmed that Spears was booked in the early hours of Thursday morning before being released shortly after 6am under California’s “cite and release” system, which allows suspects to leave custody while awaiting a court appearance.

She is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on Monday, 4 May.

The singer’s representatives released a statement following the arrest.

“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

“Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

The arrest adds to a long and highly publicised series of personal struggles and controversies that have followed Spears throughout her career.

The singer, who rose to global fame in the late 1990s with hits such as “…Baby One More Time”, “Oops!… I Did It Again” and “Toxic”, has been one of the most closely scrutinised celebrities of the modern era.

Her personal life first became tabloid headlines in the mid-2000s, during a period that included her 2007 public breakdown, when she famously shaved her head and was repeatedly photographed in confrontations with paparazzi. Around the same time, Spears faced legal issues including a misdemeanour hit-and-run incident and driving without a valid licence.

In 2008, a court placed the singer under a conservatorship controlled largely by her father, Jamie Spears, following concerns about her mental health and wellbeing. The arrangement meant Spears had limited control over her finances, career and personal decisions for more than a decade.

The controversial legal arrangement remained in place for 13 years, ending only in November 2021 after a global fan movement known as #FreeBritney pushed for the star to regain control of her life and career.

Since the conservatorship ended, Spears has remained a frequent topic of public debate due to her unfiltered social media posts, erratic online behaviour, and ongoing family tensions, including disputes with members of her family and her highly publicised divorce from actor and model Sam Asghari in 2023.

Police have also reportedly been called to her home multiple times in recent years for wellness checks and disturbance reports, further fuelling concerns among fans about the singer’s wellbeing.

Despite the controversies, Spears remains one of the best-selling pop artists of all time, having sold more than 100 million records worldwide and influencing an entire generation of pop performers.

For now, the focus shifts to the legal process ahead, with Spears expected to appear in court in May to address the DUI charge.

Britney Spears Sells Entire Music Catalogue For €167 Million

Britney Spears has sold the rights to her entire music catalogue in a landmark deal reportedly worth around €167 million.

The pop icon is said to have sold the catalogue to independent music publisher Primary Wave on 30 December in a deal estimated at approximately $200 million (£146 million), although full details and the exact valuation have not been publicly confirmed.

The sale marks a significant moment in the career of one of the most influential pop stars of the last three decades — and comes after years of personal and legal turmoil that reshaped both her life and legacy.

Spears first burst onto the global stage in 1998 with “…Baby One More Time”, a debut single that didn’t just top charts — it defined a generation of late-90s pop. The school-uniform music video became instantly iconic, catapulting the then-teenager into superstardom almost overnight.

She followed it with a string of era-defining hits including “Oops!... I Did It Again,” “Toxic,” “Stronger,” “Everytime,” “Gimme More,” and “Womanizer.” Across the 2000s, Spears dominated MTV, radio and global charts, selling more than 100 million records worldwide and becoming one of the best-selling female artists in history.

Her influence extended beyond music. Spears became a defining cultural figure of the early 2000s — shaping fashion, choreography, music video aesthetics and the very blueprint of modern pop stardom. Artists from Taylor Swift to Dua Lipa have cited her as a major influence.

But alongside her professional success, Spears endured intense public scrutiny. Her highly publicised relationships, including her brief 2004 marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander and later to dancer Kevin Federline, were relentlessly covered by tabloids. Following a series of personal struggles in the mid-2000s, Spears was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship in 2008, granting her father Jamie Spears control over her financial and personal affairs.

The conservatorship, initially described as temporary, lasted for nearly 13 years.

During that time, Spears continued to work — releasing albums, embarking on world tours and completing a lucrative Las Vegas residency. However, fans increasingly questioned how someone deemed legally incapable of managing her own life could simultaneously headline multi-million-euro tours.

The grassroots #FreeBritney movement gained momentum in the late 2010s, with supporters arguing that the conservatorship was overly restrictive and exploitative. In 2021, Spears gave explosive testimony in court, describing the arrangement as abusive and saying she had been prevented from making basic personal decisions, including whether to remove an IUD.

Later that year, in November 2021, the conservatorship was officially terminated.

Since regaining control of her life and finances, Spears has largely stepped back from the traditional music industry. In January 2024, she stated she would “never return to the music industry,” distancing herself from speculation about a comeback album. Her most recent release was a 2022 duet with Elton John“Hold Me Closer,” a reimagining of his classic “Tiny Dancer.”

The decision to sell her catalogue follows a growing trend among major artists who have opted to cash in on their publishing and master rights. Primary Wave, the company reportedly acquiring Spears’ catalogue, has previously secured rights linked to the estates of The Notorious B.I.G., Prince, and Whitney Houston, positioning itself as a major player in legacy music management.

For Spears, the deal represents both financial security and a new chapter. Catalogue sales can offer artists immediate liquidity while allowing specialised firms to manage licensing, sync deals and long-term brand strategy.

Yet beyond the business element, the sale underscores just how valuable her body of work remains.

From the instantly recognisable opening notes of “…Baby One More Time” to the electro-pop brilliance of “Toxic”, Spears’ music continues to resonate across generations. Her songs are regularly rediscovered on streaming platforms, used in film and television, and referenced in contemporary pop culture.

Few artists can claim to have defined an era as distinctly as Britney Spears did. Even fewer have navigated such public highs and devastating lows under the global spotlight.

With the sale of her catalogue, Spears appears to be taking another step in reclaiming ownership — not just legally, but symbolically — over a career that shaped modern pop history.

Whatever comes next, her place in it is already secured.
