Harry Styles has spent the last decade under an almost constant spotlight. Global tours, chart-topping albums, film roles, and an audience that watches every move. But even for someone accustomed to that level of attention, there are moments that feel impossible to process publicly.

Liam Payne’s death is one of them.

Speaking with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe ahead of the release of his new album Kiss All The Time, Disco, Occasionally, Styles admitted that discussing the loss of his former One Direction bandmate remains deeply difficult.

“Full transparency, it’s like something that I, even the idea of talking about it, I struggle with that a little bit even.”

That hesitation is understandable. Payne died in October 2024 at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. For the surviving members of One Direction. Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, the loss was both deeply personal and painfully public.

The bandmates reunited in November that year at Payne’s funeral, alongside their former manager Simon Cowell. It was a rare moment of quiet solidarity after years of pursuing separate paths.

Styles explained that what made the experience particularly complicated was the way grief becomes shared, and sometimes scrutinised, when you live in the public eye.

“I think there was a period when he passed away, where I really struggled with kind of like acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of like own part of your grief in a way.”

For someone who built his career under relentless fan attention, the emotional boundaries can blur.

“I have such strong feelings around my friend passing away, and then suddenly being, you know, like aware of there’s maybe like a desire from other people of you to convey that in some way, or it means you’re not feeling what you’re feeling or something, you know?”

It’s a delicate balance, mourning privately while the world watches.

What seems to affect Styles most is the personal closeness he shared with Payne. They weren’t simply colleagues from a successful band. They were young men navigating the same extraordinary rise to fame.

“It’s so difficult to lose a friend. It’s difficult to lose any friend, but it’s so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways.”

Styles paused before adding a simple but powerful description.

“It’s like, I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great.”

The loss forced him into reflection. Turning 30 and stepping away between albums gave him space to think about what he wants his life, and career, to look like going forward.

“It was a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself, 'OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?.’”

Ultimately, Styles believes the best way to honour someone you’ve lost is not through public statements or performances of grief.

It’s through living.

“And I think the greatest way you can honour your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest.”

“Like super special person and really sad.”

Sometimes, the most honest tribute is simply remembering who someone was.
