Beyoncé has sent fans into overdrive after posting a series of striking images in a dramatic purple gown, fuelling widespread speculation that her long-rumoured rock album could finally be on the way.

The singer, 44, shared the snaps on Instagram this week, with many quick to link the look to Prince’s iconic Purple Rain era, while others pointed out her pearl bag as a potential nod to his 1991 album Diamonds and Pearls.

Beyoncé is set to co-chair next week’s Met Gala in New York, and insiders claim new music could be unveiled around the high-profile event.

One source said: “Beyoncé is just days away from giving her fans new music.” They added: “Beyoncé is all about theatre in her artistry and this is one of her most progressive and exciting albums. Fans do not have long to wait. Beyoncé will reveal what she has been working on.”

Rumours of a rock-inspired project have been circulating for months, with reports last year suggesting the album would form the final part of her trilogy, following 2022’s Renaissance and 2024’s Cowboy Carter.

Both records explored the Black roots of dance and country music respectively, and many now believe Act III will turn to rock and roll, a genre also deeply rooted in Black musical history.

There have been other theories about what direction she might take. Some fans have speculated about a Destiny’s Child reunion after surprise appearances from Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams on tour, while others floated R&B or even reggaeton influences following her public support of Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl.

Still, the strongest evidence continues to point firmly toward rock.

Much of that theory is rooted in Beyoncé’s long-standing admiration for Tina Turner, widely regarded as the queen of rock and roll.

The pair famously performed together at the 2008 Grammys, an experience Beyoncé once described as “literally a dream”. Following Turner’s death in May 2023, Beyoncé paid tribute on stage in London, telling fans: “If you’re a fan of mine, you’re a fan of Tina Turner, ’cause I wouldn’t be on this stage without Tina Turner.”

She has continued referencing Turner through styling and imagery on her Cowboy Carter World Tour.

There are also intriguing numerical clues. Turner released her landmark album Private Dancer on May 29, 1984, aged 44 — the same age Beyoncé is now. Both Renaissance and Cowboy Carter were released on the 29th of the month, leading some to speculate that Act III could follow suit, potentially arriving in late May.

Collaborations could also hint at a heavier sound.

In 2024, Jack White of The White Stripes revealed Beyoncé had sent him a bouquet with a note reading: “Jack, I just wanted you to know how much you inspired me on this record. Sending you my love, Beyoncé.”

While many assumed she was referencing Cowboy Carter, others believe it could relate to unreleased material. Beyoncé previously teamed up with White on Don’t Hurt Yourself, one of her most rock-leaning tracks.

Meanwhile, Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine shared that Beyoncé had sent a signed Renaissance vinyl to his mother, activist Mary Morello, for her 101st birthday, sparking further collaboration rumours. Adding to the speculation, Serj Tankian of System of a Down was spotted attending her tour last year — a move some fans see as a potential sign of heavier influences, especially given Beyoncé has previously been seen wearing Slayer merchandise.

The possible album title has also been widely debated.

For a time, the domain “blackbetty.com” redirected to Beyoncé’s official site, prompting speculation that Act III could be called Black Betty.

The name itself carries layered meaning, from its origins as a 1939 work song by Lead Belly to later associations with Ram Jam’s 1977 hit, as well as references to items like whips, wagons and motorcycles — all tied to complex strands of Black history and culture.

Beyoncé is also said to be drawing inspiration from Betty Davis, the pioneering funk-rock artist who died in 2022, as well as Prince.

Fashion and branding hints have only deepened the mystery. A recent Valentine’s merchandise drop featured nipple tassels and faux-leather chokers, with one item — dubbed the “Bodyguard choker” — carrying the tagline: “A little rock n roll with a whole lotta sexy”.

Around the same time, her final campaign with Levi’s showed her arriving on a white horse before leaving on a motorbike in an advert titled The Denim Cowboy, imagery strongly associated with rock culture and again echoing Black Betty references.

Even older visuals are being re-examined.

On her 2022 British Vogue cover shoot, Beyoncé appeared in three distinct looks: riding a horse, sitting on a disco ball, and dressed in leather on a motorbike — which fans now believe could have foreshadowed the trilogy’s country, dance and rock themes.

Perhaps the most telling clue, however, dates back over a decade.

When Beyoncé headlined Glastonbury in 2011, becoming the first Black female solo artist to do so, she told the crowd: “I want you to know, right now, you are witnessing my dream… I always wanted to be a rockstar”. With the festival set to return in 2027 after a fallow year, some are already speculating she could headline again as part of a future tour cycle.

If the established pattern holds — album releases in even years followed by tours in odd years — then 2026 could bring Act III, with a 2027 tour to follow.

For now, though, it’s important to note that despite the mounting evidence — from the purple dress and Prince references to industry hints and long-running fan theories — nothing has been officially confirmed. As it stands, it’s all speculation… at least for now.
