Kingfishr Among Local Heroes In Cork Communities Recognised With Civic Receptions

Kingfishr have been recognised at a recent civic reception at Cork County Hall for their contribution to Irish music.

The band were one of five recipients of this honour with civic receptions at Cork County Hall.

Along with the Killeagh hitmakers, the achievements of Kilbrittain GAA club, Aghabullogue GAA club, the Cork Federation of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA), National Ambulance Service Worker Patrick McCarthy, were also recognised.


Kingfishr were honoured, with their popular track, Killeagh reaching number one in the Irish music charts last December. Having first hit top spot in May last year, the track returned to No1 for Christmas week last year.

They have also supported stars like George Ezra, Bruce Springsteen, Snow Patrol and James Bay on tour. The band are also touring in the UK and Europe, before embarking on a North American tour in August.

Elsewhere, Aghabullogue GAA club were also honoured, having won multiple championships and titles in both Gaelic football and hurling in 2025. They will be targeting more success when their championship season kicks off in a few weeks.

Another GAA side honoured with a civic reception was Kilbrittain GAA club, who became the seventh club from the Rebel County to win the All Ireland Junior Club Hurling Championship at Croke Park last year, following a one point victory over Sligo champions, Easkey.

The Cork Federation of the ICA, was also honoured, for their work in communities both nationally and locally, as they celebrate their 90th anniversary. They are the largest women's association in Ireland.

Another recipient was Patrick McCarthy, having reached the milestone of 25 years of service with the National Ambulance Service.


A civic reception is the highest honour that a group or individual can receive by the Mayor of the County.

According to local newspaper, The Corkman, the county's mayor, Cllr Mayor Linehan Foley said that recognising and celebrating the achievements of local heroes was a privilege.

“On behalf of the people of County Cork, I wish to express our sincre appreciation to Killbrittain GAA Club, Aghabullogue GAA Club, the Cork Federation of the ICA, Kingfishr and Patrick McCarthy for their commitment, determination, and hard work", the Mayor said. “I also want to acknowledge the vital support of their families and supporters, who have stood alongside them throughout their journeys". 

Elsewhere, Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Moire Murrell also paid tribute to all recipients at the civic reception.

“We formally recognise and celebrate the achievements of Killbrittain GAA Club, Aghabullogue GAA Club, the Cork Federation of the ICA, Kingfishr, and Patrick McCarthy, together with the wider communities whose support and commitment have been integral to their success", she told The Corkman.

“On behalf of Cork County Council, I extend our sincere and warm congratulations to all of you. Comhghairdeachas libh go léir".
