The country can expect to contend with torrential rainfall brought by a storm approaching from the Atlantic Ocean this bank holiday weekend, forecasters say.

The weather has been disappointing of late, with cloudier conditions, frequent showers and chillier evenings taking over from the spectacular few weeks of wall-to-wall sunshine that came before.

Met Éireann's outlook for the weekend is consistent with this, as the national forecaster says we can expect the unsettled weather to spill over into next week too, with blustery conditions appearing.

But it could be about to get a whole lot worse as weather models show a massive band of rain heading our way from the west.

The ominous band of rain is set to make landfall soon.

According to the models, the band will make landfall around 3pm on Monday, bringing with it heavy rain and wind.

Met Éireann appear to have confirmed as much, giving this forecast for Monday: "Mainly dry through Monday morning and most of the afternoon with sunny spells at times. It will become increasingly cloudy towards into the afternoon as rain moves in western regions, spreading eastwards into the evening.

"Rain will be heavy at times. Highest temperatures of 14C to 17C in strong southwesterly winds, reaching gale force strength along western coasts."

This latest update signals that, as well as rain, the upcoming bank holiday storm is poised to bring powerful southwesterly winds, reaching gale-force gusts at times.

The combination of heavy rain and strong winds raise concerns about potential flooding, travel disruption and infrastructure damage.

But there remains the positive prospect of a heatwave return mooted for June as high pressure is expected to once again build, signifying warm and clear conditions.

Met Éireann's projected weather forecast for 9 to 15 June says:

"A much more settled picture is indicated as high pressure to the south builds, keeping low pressure systems further north. Temperatures will likely be around or slightly above normal. Much of the country will be drier than normal though there is the potential for above average amounts in the north, most likely from early in the week."

For the following week of 16 to 22 June, Met Eireann added: "For this week, settled conditions are likely to persist bringing drier and warmer conditions across the country as high pressure dominates. With the slack airflow, some fog will likely develop during the nights."

Saturday night

Looking to the more immediate future, tonight will see sporadic outbreaks of rain that will move into the west before spreading back eastwards.

The rain will be become patchier towards morning.

We can expect a chilly Saturday night, with expected temperatures in the range of 7 to 11 degrees.

Sunday

Tomorrow will be rather mixed throughout, throwing up breezy conditions along with some sunny spells and scattered showers, most frequent over the northern half of the country.

The southern part will see more lasting spells of sunshine with temperatures varying from 13 to 18 degrees.

Monday

This bank holiday Monday will begin mostly dry with sunny spells and a few isolated showers.

However, as the storm makes its way across the country from the Atlantic, we can expect considerable cloud formation as rain pushes into the west, spreading eastwards later in the afternoon and evening.

The rain will turn quite heavy in places, also turning windy with strong and gusty southwest winds developing.

There will be highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees.

The storm will leave us with a wet start to the night as rain continues to fall, though gradually clearing eastwards into the Irish Sea.

Scattered showers and clear spells will follow behind, bringing fresh temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.
