A new portrait honouring the late Academy Award-winning actress Brenda Fricker has been unveiled by Irish portrait artist Shane Gillen, following the acclaimed performer's death at the age of 81.
Created in the Church of St Paul's in Lisbon, Portugal, the portrait is a tribute to one of Ireland's most celebrated actors, whose career spanned decades across film, television and stage. Gillen said he felt compelled to create the work in recognition of Fricker's lasting influence on Irish culture and cinema.
"Brenda Fricker was the quiet hero of The Liberties," Gillen said. "She represented the very best of Ireland's soft power and gave so much to Irish film, storytelling and culture throughout her remarkable career."
To accompany the portrait, Gillen also produced a short film documenting the creative process. Filmed inside the historic Lisbon church, the piece features Fricker reciting Voice, a poem by Majella Kelly reflecting on Ireland's Mother and Baby Homes. The soundtrack blends music by Myles O'Reilly, Fred again, Anúna and composer Michael Glynn.
Originally from Sligo and now based in Lisbon, Gillen is known for his intricate pen-and-pencil portraiture. Alongside his work as Creative Director of marketing company Circulate, he has produced portraits of a number of high-profile figures, including actor Matt Damon, former President Michael D. Higgins, historian Catherine Corless and U2 frontman Bono.
Fricker, whose acclaimed performances in My Left Foot and The Field earned her international recognition, remains one of Ireland's most distinguished actors. Gillen said he hopes the portrait serves as a lasting tribute to her extraordinary contribution to the arts and to the legacy she leaves behind.
