Irish Rail passengers across Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Clare are facing widespread disruption this Easter bank holiday weekend, as Iarnród Éireann carries out a series of major engineering works across the network.

From Good Friday through to Easter Monday, revised timetables will be in place on all routes, with significant changes affecting intercity and commuter services, particularly in the west and south of the country.

One of the most substantial disruptions will impact the Dublin to Galway line, where train services will be fully replaced by buses for the entire journey from Friday evening through to Monday morning.

The changes are due to ongoing works linked to the redevelopment of Ceannt Station in Galway, as well as track and bridge upgrades and expansion works at Oranmore Station.

Passengers travelling between Limerick and Galway will also face disruption, with bus transfers operating between Athenry and Galway, while services between Dublin Heuston and Westport will involve bus transfers between Heuston and Athlone.

In Cork, commuters are being warned to expect changes across the weekend as upgrade works continue as part of the Cork Area Commuter Rail programme.

Bus replacements will be in operation on routes serving Cobh, Midleton and Mallow on Saturday and Sunday, while intercity services between Cork and Dublin Heuston, as well as Cork to Tralee routes, will involve bus transfers between Cork and Mallow.

These works form part of a wider long-term investment programme aimed at increasing capacity and improving reliability across Cork’s rail network, including plans for more frequent services and expanded infrastructure in the coming years.

Additional disruption is expected in the Dublin area, where DART services between Connolly and Dun Laoghaire will be suspended from Saturday to Easter Monday, impacting travel along one of the busiest commuter corridors in the country.

Passengers are being urged to plan ahead and check times before travelling, as services will operate to revised schedules throughout the weekend. Good Friday will see modified timetables, while Easter Monday services will generally run on a Sunday schedule.

With engineering works taking place simultaneously across multiple stations, rail users should expect longer journey times and potential delays, particularly on intercity routes connecting major cities.

Iarnród Éireann has apologised for the inconvenience, stating that the works are essential to improving the network and delivering more reliable services in the future.
