An 18-year-old Irish woman was killed in a car crash in Iceland, along with two other young people.

Two women and one man died after their car veered off the road south of Reykjavík in the early hours of Monday morning.

The 18-year-old Irish woman has been named as Hannah Jane Large, from Greystones in Co Wicklow.

The three young people were driving south on Krýsuvíkurvegur, near Bláfjallavegur, when the crash occurred.

Iceland’s national broadcaster, RÚV, reported that police and the Transport Safety Investigation Board are investigating the incident.

The President of Iceland Halla Tómasdóttir posted to social media that her thoughts were with those who died in the crash.

"No words can capture such a loss. When grief strikes in this way, we are reminded of how precious and fragile life is. Let us be careful and look out for one another," Ms Tómasdóttir said in the post.

Replying to the post Hannah Jane Large's mother, Sam Large, said: "Thank you for the statement. My daughter Hannah from Ireland was one of the victims of this tragedy. She fell in love with your country, she loved the people and her last few days were the happiest of her life, that is the only consolation we have and hold onto. We spoke to her that night and she was full of joy. Tragic she leaves her brother and us behind."
